We are a family run business established in 1986 by Stuart James in Horam, East Sussex. The first year or so was a small local paper advert, one man and van set up. Stock comprised a rather antiquated (looking back) early frame marquee, and some very busy weekends after a week in the full time job in the air conditioning industry! At the time marquees were essentially the old canvas scout type tents with lots of wooden poles/ropes, smelly and leaky! Stuart had the foresight to see a market beyond the village fete and with a little pre-internet research stumbled across a fledgling new manufacturer in Tectonics UK. He drove down to Hampshire to check them out. Tectonics UK is now recognized as one of the world leaders in the manufacturer of temporary and portable structures (we still buy from them most seasons)!

In 1987 Stuart took the plunge, handed in his notice and bought a brand new Tectonics marquee, together with a larger van and trailer ... James Marquee Hire was born. The proceeding years saw him slowly but surely add to his stock. Interior linings transformed what is actually a big frame tent and took him straight into the wedding market. This inevitably led to tables, chairs, dance floors, flooring, lighting etc. Year on year he increased stock and the company went from strength to strength building bespoke marquees for clients in Sussex and Kent. Business was initially conducted from Stuart's garage in Horam, moved to premises in Wadhurst and then on to Five Ashes (near Heathfield). As is the trend within the industry, marquee companies tend to remain fairly small, giving a personal service and taking on perhaps three or four large jobs per week in the height of the season. Stuart grew the business on this basis and it remains this way to date.

After eighteen seasons Stuart decided to move on to pursue other business and personal interests. He tentatively put out some feelers and by chance a family get-together resulted in a sale in 2006 to Stuart's nephew Mark Procter.

Mark Procter, and long time business partner Robert Noakes, bought all stock and goodwill and took over as Directors in January 2006. Mark and Robert worked hard, learnt fast and invested heavily in new and updated equipment including the introduction of Luxury Toilets and Generators (previously sourced from outside). The business, already successful and with its founder still around in an advisory capacity, took on a fresh lease of life. By 2010, now with five full time members of staff, James Marquees moved to its new larger premises in Hellingly.

In March 2012 Robert took the big decision to emigrate to Perth, Australia and sold his stake in the business to Mark. Mark continues to run the business as Director along with his wife Jo, full time staff members Kevin Simpson, Lee Reilly and Simon Bray and numerous returning seasonal staff.
